Using the U17-5 in Telford

Telford was designated a new town in 1963, and its estates run from 1960s and 1970s housing to newer ones such as Lawley, planned for around 3,500 homes. Where you have side access wider than 1.05 m, the U17-5 digs footings, drives and drains.

Much of the town is built over the old East Shropshire coalfield, and the council warns that many mine shafts are not on any plan. Before you dig footings or a soakaway, check the free coal mining map; if you hit a void, stop and call 0800 288 4242.

For a new drive, Telford & Wrekin Council takes a £250 application for a dropped kerb (£200 back if it is refused) and wants 6 m between the house and the footway. With approval, the U17-5 and the dumper dig out a permeable drive that needs no planning permission.

Before the U17-5 arrives

  • Check the coal mining map if you are in a Development High Risk Area.
  • Measure the access: more than 1.05 m clear.
  • Run a LinesearchbeforeUdig (LSBUD) search first.
  • Have an adult on site for the handover.

Questions we get asked

How much is mini digger delivery to Telford?

£68.98 each way to a TF3 postcode, ex VAT, based on 26.1 road miles: £40 for the first 10 and £1.80 a mile after. Checkout prices your exact postcode.

Do I need to worry about old mine workings?

In a Development High Risk Area, yes: the government says to check for mining risks before you build. Use the free coal mining map, and stop and call 0800 288 4242 if you find a void.

Can I hire a dumper too?

Yes. The Thwaites 1 tonne high-tip dumper is £70 a day ex VAT and can go on the same booking.

Do I need a licence to hire it?

No licence or ticket is needed to hire from us or to operate the machine on private property. We hand over the machine on site, walk you through the controls and the daily checks, and the operator guide stays with the machine.

Do I need insurance?

No insurance needed to hire. You're responsible for the machine while it's with you. You can get a hired-in plant insurance quote at checkout.

Is there a deposit?

No deposit and no trade account. We keep the card you pay with on file and only charge it for damage or loss, under our hire terms.
